Clubs and Activities

Clubs and Activities

Staff at the Mediated Learning Academy, apart from their normal teaching duties, also run a number of clubs and activities, normally across the lunch hour. While the object is, of course, to have fun, it is certain that a child learns most and best in things he is having fun with and has an interest in.

  • Science Club: Joyce Westereng leads students in exploring the fun side of science, and helps those who are having trouble with the curriculum.
  • Karate: Taught by Stephan Fournier, these twice-a-week lunchtime sessions not only train our students in the basics (and beyond) of self defense, but help with general physical co-ordination and self-esteem. There is a nominal fee of $5 for each 25-minute session.
  • Games: Competitive and co-operative board games, and "old-school" (no violence or nudity) computer games, led by Blair Yochim, and selected to improve our students' cognitive skills while primarily being fun; plus dexterity games like Rubik's Cube which improve both fine motor and problem-solving skills.
  • Wii: Competitive and co-operative games on the Wii, led by Peter Woods, enhance our students' understanding of fair play and sharing, while the unique Wii motion sensor controls enhance co-ordination and motor control. Specific games include Tennis, Bowling, Dance, and Big Brain Academy.
  • Beading and knitting: Taught by MarilĂș, the beading and knitting club create beaded craft projects and learn the basics of knitting, improving their dexterity and fine motor skills while producing useful knit items.
  • Choir: Led by Stephan Fournier, Nathan Blackburn and Carson Ho, Choir members learn the joy of singing, and the basics of harmony. The choir performs during the Winter Concert and at the Award and Grad ceremony.

The available clubs and activities are evaluated through the course of each year, and new activities are started when there is interest and support for them. Check back to see our new activities!
