Welcome Back Newsletter

September 2008

Dear Parents,

Time, as always, has a way of passing very quickly.  We can hardly believe that shortly it will be September again, let alone that this is the start of our 6th year at the Mediated Learning Academy.  Each year we have grown in every way: population, staff, services offered.  This coming year is no exception. We are delighted to open our primary annex and are very excited about this expansion.

We hope you will be able to attend the ‘Welcome Back BBQ’ on Friday, September 5th from 5:00 – 7:30pm at our main school, organized by our thoughtful PAC. Bus will run as usual at 12:00 (there will be no supervision available at school between 12-5pm).  The BBQ will provide an opportunity to meet each other and to meet the new staff. Please bring all your family! More information will follow from the PAC.

In order to provide an opportunity for the staff to meet as a whole on the first day, students will only attend school from 8:45 to 11:00am on this first day of school.  You are invited to join the PAC in the main school library for coffee and information about school and PAC events.

PLANNERS

A crucial part of the Mediated Learning Experience is the cognitive function of Planning. Students will practice planning in their yearly school planners. All students need this school planner in class as well as for home/school communication. The cost of these planners is $20 per child.  This does not quite cover the entire school cost of the planner due to the small order.  Our student handbook is now incorporated into the planner. Please sign and return school regulations pages. Planners will be available to purchase at the office in September. The office would appreciate exact change or a cheque made out to M.L.A.

FUNDRAISING

Dear Parents,

FUNDRAISING MATTERS TO OUR SCHOOL

While our Fall term is a very busy fundraiser time of year, January until June is not as busy.

                                                Welcome Back September 2008                 -4-

Many schools ask parents for a set number of volunteer hours or a set amount of money in lieu.  We have chosen to make participation voluntary.  This does not, however, imply that we do not need your participation.

We need you to support two main events:

-                     10th Annual DINNER/SILENT AUCTION

November 28th  6pm onwards

We welcome large and small auction items, as well as help on the event night. Last year we made $30,000 to support the school and our programs!  We cannot do it without you.

If every family donated 1 item, we would then have over 100 items to auction.  We would appreciate balloon prize donations (items valued from $10 - $100)

-                     IMAX:  the IMAX fundraiser is our main event for the Variety Learning Centre. Tickets are $10. and all the proceeds after the payment of the projectionist go to the Centre. This event takes place on a Sunday morning at 11:00 am, (Spring day in 2008 to be determined). We hope that you will be able to come and/or help to sell tickets. If we sell out the 400 seat theatre we could make over $3,500.00!

We trust that we can count on you for support.

Other ongoing fundraising efforts:

Entertainment books, Flower Bulbs, Purdy’s, we appreciate your purchasing and/or helping to sell these items. Last year we made aprox. $3,000.00.

September to June – Order online Magazine Sale QSP WWW.QSP.CA  Group #3011.  Christmas is a great time to give subscriptions!  Order all year!

Book Fair – Thank you for coming to buy books and helping with the running of the Book Fair once a year. A sign-up list for shifts will be available in the office closer to the book fair. We make our profit back in books for the library. Last year we earned over $2,000.00 worth of books for our library, between the Book fair and regular scholastic orders!

                                                Welcome Back September 2008         – 5 -

ONGOING Fundraisers:

– We collect Campbell’s soup labels for books and computers. Please leave them in the PAC box in the office. We did not have enough labels to cash in last year but we are still collecting!

PROGRESSIVE FUNDRAISING gift certificate orders. These certificates are at no additional cost to you - same as cash. The school makes a small profit through the consolidator. The more we sell – the more we make. We made approx. $800.00 last year! ( see attached order sheet)

Canadian Tire Cash is collected at Office.  We spend the money in the Spring on playground toys for the students.  Last year we collected $50. towards their purchase.

Key:  ** Parent volunteer help needed with this fundraiser

Fundraising is critical for our school’s financial health. We raise about $40,000.00 a year for text books, library books, and for extra services for our children thanks to your support.

We do not expect families to participate in all of these events – but we do expect every family to participate in at least one.  Participation can be in the form of time donated or in the form of donation of a tangible item.

With appreciation, the M.L.A.

Sharing the

 Memories of Giving

Dear Parents:

We are inviting you and your child to participate in the upcoming Holiday Gift Shop program at our school.  This valuable program makes it possible for our children to experience the excitement of choosing their own special holiday gifts for family and friends.

The Holiday Gift Shop program will be set up at school and supervised by our parent volunteers and older students (Grades 10-12), who will help the children pick out their gifts in a familiar, safe, comfortable atmosphere.

We believe this program will create wonderful memories for the children, while teaching them to budget their money, make decisions and appreciate the value of different items.  At the same time, they will have the fun of surprising a loved one with a ‘secret’ gift they bought all by themselves.  Our older students will help the younger students set up, do inventory control, count/make change, etc.  This will be a valuable experience for them.

P.S.  Parents and Grandparents:  Please feel free to sign up and be a volunteer in this worthwhile program.

PAC Page

Our PAC at MLA is very small and is feeling the pressure of running our events due to few parents who volunteer/come to meetings.  Out of 100+ parents only 10-15 consistently attend meetings/volunteer.  We must have more parents become involved in the PAC in order for it to not only to thrive, but to survive.

Ways you can help:

1.     We need parents to volunteer to help with Hot Lunches once a        month.  Since we do not have lunches every month, this is only    about 8 times a year.

2.     We need help with fundraisers (we only do 1 big one a year).

3.     We need parents to help with refreshment at 2-3 evenings a   year.

4.     We need people to come to PAC meetings once a month.  They        are Tuesday – usually first Tuesday - evenings (7pm) each

month.  Each meeting is 1 - 1.5 hours long.

5.     We need parents to work on our Earthquake kits.

6.     We need PAC parents to help Kathleen with the Auction.
